What do you think the percentage is in your church?
According to a new Pew Research Center study, only 82% of professing evangelicals believe in Hell today (and only 60% of mainliners).
2019 is a time of biblical illiteracy. We can help people live better lives, defeat depression, be fulfilled in their career, and get in community.
But at some point, discipleship also includes some meat.
Or even a little milk.
Like… is Hell real or not?
What would the people in your church say?
Hell isn’t all that popular today. (When was the last time you did a sermon on Hell? Or even mentioned it?)
But one of the reasons most of us answered the call to ministry was to keep people out of… you guessed it… Hell.
Reminds me of an old Degarmo and Key song called Boycott Hell (I always thought it said “Boy Caught Hell”, but that’s another story).
Here are the lyrics:
We've gotta job to do
We're runnin' out of time to do it
You've got a gift to use
Get out in the world and use it
Bury your foolish pride
We've gotta unionize
Boy, don't you think it's time
To boycott hell?Boycott hell
We've got the strength to win
Standing arm in arm together
Forget our differences
We can change the world forever
Bury your foolish pride
We've gotta unionize
Boy, don't you think it's
Time to boycott hell?Don't let a neighbor go
Form a holy picket line
We've gotta let them know
Don't you think it's time
To boycott hell
What do YOU think?
