Thanksgiving Reflection: Finding Gratitude for Critics
On this journey through the week of Thanksgiving, let's continue to untangle our understandings of gratitude on the Healthy Church Staff Podcast. Here's an uncomfortable thought for church staff – should we be expressing gratitude for those who misunderstand us, underestimate us, or even hurt us?
Critics: A Hidden Blessing?
This could easily be met with a sigh of bewilderment. Can we really think of these critics in our leadership as blessings? As painful as it may be, the answer is yes. Not necessarily because their criticism was accurate or kind, but because they refined something in us that the chorus of praise and applause never could.
Criticism Fuels Growth
Naturally, our gratitude extends to the teammates who support us—the encouragers and cheerleaders who have our backs. However, the critics, the frustrating contrarians, the church members who always spot a flaw, or the perpetual second-guessers, often play crucial roles in our development.
Critics, whether they mean to or not, can help us expose our blind spots, teach us restraint, fine-tune our message and motives, and remind us that we aren't invincible. They also teach us the invaluable lessons of forgiveness, clarification, and dependence on God when praise and affirmation are scarce.
Your deepest character development, the ingrained aspects of your leadership, were often not molded by applause. More likely, they were sharpened in the crucible of resistance.
Embracing Critics: An Exercise in Gratitude
Remembering our critics and considering their unexpected contribution may feel daunting. However, it could also be seen as an act of transformational gratitude. Those seemingly unjust criticisms could have tested your character, and revealed your strengths in ways you couldn't anticipate.
So, this Thanksgiving, reflect upon those who have frustrated or criticized you this year or have presented you with an unexpected challenge. Consider what God has taught you through these experiences and see if you can find aspects of these experiences that you can thank God for.
If you could step back and recognize that the people who've tested your patience have contributed to your growth as a leader, then that is something to be sincerely thankful for.
Thanksgiving Challenge
It's a challenging take on Thanksgiving gratitude indeed, but with honesty and openness, can be immensely enriching. You may discover that your critics were not necessarily your enemies; they may have been unintentional mentors who shaped your character and leadership in profound ways.
