The Single Perspective Instinct

The 'Single Perspective Instinct' is our inclination to rely heavily on one perspective or person, overlooking the value of other viewpoints or interdisciplinary approaches. This can be a subtle yet significant pitfall among church staff. It’s easy to heavily lean on a pastor's viewpoint or a particular theological lens while neglecting other valid perspectives, falling into the trap of tunnel vision.

The result? A complex, multifaceted church community seen through a narrow lens, leading to missed details, insights, and innovative solutions. It can also lead to ministry silos when diverse aspects of church life operate in isolation rather than in collaboration.

Overcoming the Single Perspective Instinct

Rosling suggests an antidote: substituting a toolbox for a hammer. The hammer symbolizes our reliance on a single perspective or solution; the toolbox, on the other hand, symbolizes embracing a diversity of perspectives and creating a more nuanced, multi-dimensional ministry approach. As church leaders, this implies:

  • Seeking diverse perspectives: Encourage open dialogues and make space for respectful disagreements.
  • Recognizing unique contributions: Giving everyone a voice within the congregation, thus nurturing a sense of collective ownership and shared leadership.
  • Value interdisciplinary tools: Drawing insights from diverse fields like psychology, sociology, cultural studies, or even business to enrich our ministries.

Building a Toolbox Approach

The 'Single Perspective Instinct' poses a risk of potentially narrowing our vision and compromising the entirety and richness of church life. Adopting a toolbox approach counteracts this risk, fostering a diverse and inclusive church community.
