While politics is omnipresent and can stir passionate debates within congregations, church leadership plays a crucial role in steering the conversation and maintaining a focus on the providence of God. ### **The Nonpartisan Approach to Church Leadership** Even while fully engaging as private citizens, church leaders should aim to remain nonpartisan in their roles. It's all about exercising wisdom, understanding, and patience, knowing that the political opinions within your congregation could vary greatly. Church leaders' focus should remain on the preaching and spreading of the gospel, not potentially divisive elements such as politics. ### **Focus on the Providence of God** In the face of challenging political conversations, a steadfast focus on the providence of God offers clarity and leadership. Regardless of political affiliations or the outcome of any elections, it's important to remind your congregation and yourself that God remains in control. When faced with politically-charged atmospheres, returning to scriptures such as Psalm 46 – 'Be still and know that I'm God' - serves to realign our perspective. ### **Prayer, Participation, and Perseverance** During an election year, maintaining focus on three key aspects will go a long way: - **Prayer:** Encourage your congregation to engage in prayer for the nation and leaders. Praying together, despite differing political views, bridges division and fosters unity. - **Participation:** Encourage your congregation members to execute their civic duty by voting. After all, participation in the democratic process is a key aspect of good citizenship. - **Perseverance:** Continue doing what you're typically doing. Maintaining steadfast in your mission, amidst the tumult of an election year, sets an example for your congregation. Your consistent joy and commitment to the gospel act as a beacon for others, especially when societal tensions are high. No matter the election year or political climate, the opportunity for church staff to lead with focus, grace, and understanding remains constant.
