The Ministry Unicorn Myth

Discover why chasing the elusive "ministry unicorn" can harm your church's growth and limit your hiring process efficiency in today's insightful blog post.

Unicorn Myth, Candidate

Dismantling the Myth of the Ministry Unicorn

In the search for the ideal church staff member, many churches find themselves in the pursuit of a ministry unicorn; an imaginary impeccably equipped leader with flawless theology, dynamic charisma, unmatched leadership, and a staggering resume. Much like the mythical creature, the perfect ministry candidate doesn't exist. The pursuit of this perfection is only serving to harm your hiring process.

Unicorn Hunting: A Fruitless Endeavor

Hunting for a ministry unicorn is harmful to your church's growth and development. The longer the search goes on, the more your current staff burn out, your mission gets stalled, and potential leaders are overlooked. This elusive search diverts focus from seeking candidates with potential, character, and calling.

Unrealistic Mindsets

Signs you're engrossed in the unicorn hunt could include a protracted search mode, an expanding candidate profile, or disqualifying strong candidates for minor flaws. This mindset tends to believe that God will drop the ideal person into your lap; however, this isn't discernment, it's denial.

A Shift in Pursuit

Search for faithfulness, fruitfulness and potential in prospective candidates; those already conducting productive ministries and align with your mission. The right character and mission fit will contribute positively to your church staff's chemistry. Remember, great ministry leaders aren't discovered fully formed; they are developed within their community.

A Better Framework for Hiring

In your hiring process, consider a shift from looking for a perfect fit to a mission fit. As questions such as: - Can they do the job? - Can they grow with us? - Can we love and lead them well? - Do they help us become more like Jesus as a church?

Opt for fostering real disciples in your staff rather than chasing after unattainable perfection.

Balancing Expectations and Realities

There certainly isn't the perfect ministry unicorn, but there are exceptional leaders waiting to be recognized for their potential and not their perfection. Nurturing such leaders will contribute to a healthy church staff and a thriving church community.
