Embracing the Shepherd Within: A Lesson for Church Staff
As we carry on with our enriching Christmas 'Unwrapped' series on the Healthy Church Staff Podcast, we draw focus towards the shepherds from the nativity narrative. Chosen by God for the profound task of announcing the birth of the Messiah, these unassuming folks have impactful lessons for today's church staff.
Shepherds: The First Evangelists
Think about the moment of the Messiah's birth. Who would you select to herald the news of such a sacred event? Perhaps a religious leader, a revered politician, or a social media influencer?
God made a strikingly different choice. He selected shepherds.
In the first century, shepherds weren't celebrated or esteemed. They were deemed unclean, low-class, and often dishonest. Yet, God saw beyond, entrusting them with the most sacred moment in history. They were the first evangelists, the first worshippers, and the foremost guests at the birth of Jesus — nobodies, working the night shift.
Now reflect on this: why?
Embrace the Shepherd Within
God's preferences do not abide by human hierarchies or platforms. He has a special inclination towards the humble, available, and unlikely. Most importantly, he isn't choosing someone else; he might be choosing you.
Many church staff may relate to these shepherds. Often, you may not be the most visible individuals or decision-makers. Yet, your role of tending the flock (the congregation) is no less significant than those on stage.
Honestly, there may be moments when you feel overlooked. However, keep in mind that being in an unseen role doesn't mean your work is unnoticed, undervalued, or unnecessary.
God sees you. He values your commitment, and countless others benefit from your dedication — every small act of service, every word of encouragement, and every prayer matters.
Reframe Your Perspective
Rethink these questions today: Where have you disqualified yourself, believing that God only works through others? What sacred thing might God be entrusting to you right now?
Just like the shepherds who responded with joy and urgency to God's call, we need to be open to His guidance, even in ordinary acts of service. God doesn't need your title or status; He needs your surrender, your obedience, and your availability.
Remember, God's choice of the humble shepherd to announce the most significant birth on earth was not accidental. It's a powerful reminder for all of us that faithful obedience is what truly moves God's heart.
