Judgement, Church Staff Hiring, Fill the gap

The Danger of Desperate Hiring on Your Church Staff

Every church is faced with the challenge of hiring new staff members occasionally. Timelines, vacancies, and fear of overworking the existing team can often lead to hasty decisions resulting in bad hires. This is termed desperate hiring and unfortunately, it yields disappointing results. Here are the signs to watch out for and how to avoid such erroneous decisions.

The Pressure to Fill a Role

The pressure to fill a role can lead to desperate hiring. This urgency often emanates from a desire to avoid overworking the existing team, addressing vacant roles or the need to meet a looming deadline. However, church staffing isn't fantasy football; you don't just draft based on who's left on the board. Are you hiring because the person fits your church and team, or are you hiring out of the desperation of feeling stuck? This rush often leads to ignoring red flags which eventually results in regret.

The Rules of Hiring

To prevent desperate hiring and reinforce team strengthening, here are some guidelines to follow:

  1. Create a list of non-negotiables: Before you post a position or start interviewing, have a list of non-negotiable factors for the role. It could be theological alignment or specific skills.

  2. Have an extra pair of eyes: Involve a third party in the hiring process. If you harbor doubts about a candidate, another person might help provide a fresh perspective.

  3. Use Structured Interview Questions: Rely on structured interview questions to gain genuine insights about a candidate. It's okay to trust your gut and to walk away if you feel the candidate is not right.

  4. Don't apologize for walking away: Remember, you are not just filling a job, you're building a team. If a candidate isn't the right fit, it's okay to pass.

The Bottom Line

A healthy, vibrant, and efficient church staffing depends on careful hiring decisions. You must remember that you are not just filling a role but building a team that aligns with your church structure. Avoiding desperate hiring is one of the key steps to avoid bad hires and ensure you create a team that works honorably in serving your church's mission.
