But, what is this concept and why is it crucial for those in the church world? ### Deep Work: The Important Work As professionals involved in some of the most critical tasks, church staff need deep work. It comes from the book by Cal Newport titled *Deep Work*, a brilliant resource that you can find at Amazon or your favorite bookstore. Deep work involves high-intensity focus, eliminating distractions, and making meaningful progress in valuable work, enabling intellectual and spiritual growth. Deep work becomes even more crucial considering that being part of a church staff is no easy task. Your work isn't just significant; it holds eternal implications. Out of all the professions you could have chosen to commit your life to, you (and maybe God) chose this one – navigating through the unique, rewarding, and complex vocation of the church world. ### Enhancing Deep Work Skills Deep work is not about the volume or variety of tasks you accomplish; it's about the intensity and focus you put into your work. It's about the quality of your output. How can you make the most out of your deep work time? **1.** **Strategize:** Have a specific project or task in mind before starting your deep work session. **2.** **Schedule:** Dedicate a specific period to this undisrupted, focused work session. **3.** **Set Goals:** Aim to achieve tangible results and measurable effectiveness from your session. Even just an hour of intense focus can result in constructive outputs, making you realize the essential work you are doing. The more you practice, the better your deep work skills become, leading to a more impactful church. ### The Call to Action for Church Staff The immediate call to action is setting aside specific deep work time. Dedicate at least an hour of deep, focused work into your schedule. If necessary, adjust other appointments or tasks. Plan the specific project you will be working on during this hour and try to make it a staple in your routine. Not only does this approach augment your work's importance, but it can also make your role as a church staff member more fulfilling.
