# Why You Can't Skip Background Checks for People You Know (And How to Fix It)

Skipping background checks because you know someone isn't discernment—it's a dangerous shortcut. Here's why every church needs the same screening process for everyone.

You ran a background check on the nursery volunteer.

Form. Fee. File.

You hired the youth pastor because his dad is an elder.

No screen. No references outside the family.

You've known them for years. That's not discernment—that's a shortcut with a last name.

Sound familiar?

If you've ever been tempted to skip or expedite a background check because you knew someone personally, they were vouched for by a trusted leader, or the need seemed urgent, you're not alone. But here's the truth: **knowing someone is not the same as screening someone**.

And today, we need to talk about why that matters—and what to do about it.

## The "We've Known Them for Years" Trap

It starts with a sentence: *"We've known them for years."*

The volunteer who's been around forever who became staff. The elder's kid. The person who grew up sitting in the third row. Someone you've watched grow up, someone your wife used to change diapers for back in the nursery.

You tell yourself you've already done the work. You watched them. You trust them. You reason that the room would actually be offended if you asked them for a background check now.

So you skip it.

But here's what we need to understand: **being familiar is not a background check. A last name is not a reference. Proximity is not the same as vetting.**

And deep down, you already know this—because you know how to do it right. You do it for strangers all the time.

## You Screened the Stranger. You Skipped the Family.

Think about it:

The new nursery volunteer who walked through your doors last month? They filled out the form. You paid the fee. You waited on the report. Only then did you let them hold other people's kids.

But the youth pastor got a title because of who raised him. Same building. Same students. Different bar.

If you'd require a background check for a person you met last month, you should require it for the person you've known since their baptism. Otherwise, you don't really have a screening practice—you have a vibe.

And vibes are dangerous.

A vibe is how you tell one person they're trusted and another person they're a risk. But the difference isn't in their character—**the difference is proximity**.

> "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much." —Luke 16:10

*If someone is truly trustworthy, they will gladly submit to proper screening. Character is proven through consistent faithfulness, not bypassed through relationships.*

## The Volunteer-to-Staff Jump Is Where This Usually Hides

Here's where it gets really tricky: the volunteer-to-staff transition.

They were already here. They ran sound on Sundays. Then they started helping with the student ministry. Then you decided to put them on payroll—maybe part-time at first.

You called it "formalizing the relationship." Nobody ran the screen again. Nobody even asked if the volunteer file existed. You treated "we've known them" as your entire process.

But a new role is a new door. It comes with keys, access, authority. **The fact that they already had a badge does not mean you already did the work.**

Promotion is not a loophole. Internal candidates are not exempt.

## I Know Your Heart

Listen—I know why you skipped it.

You didn't want to insult them. You thought running a background check on someone you love would look like suspicion. You were trying to be a family, not a corporation.

That's decent. I get it.

But it's also how a shortcut with a last name becomes the story you never wanted to tell.

**Kindness that refuses the same screen you'd give a stranger is not trust—it's a bet you placed with other people's kids.**

And here's the thing: it usually doesn't blow up in the interview. It blows up on a Tuesday two years in, when the thing you would have seen on the way in shows up in the hallway. When the board asks what screening you ran. When you have to say, "We knew them."

"We knew them" is not a process. "We knew them" is the sentence you say after the damage.

### Scripture to Consider

**1 Timothy 5:21-22** - "I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism. Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure."

*Paul warns against making quick decisions about leadership and showing favoritism—both of which happen when we skip background checks for people we know.*

## You Can't Discern What You Refuse to Look At

The screen is not a lack of faith. It's not suspicion.

**The background check is how you refuse to make the congregation pay for your comfort.**

So do the boring thing while the story is still unwritten.

## The Same Screen for Everyone

Here's what I want you to do this week:

**List everyone on staff.** Every volunteer in kids and students. Not just the people you "should look at." Everyone.

If anyone skipped the same screen you'd require of a stranger—run it. Don't wait for a story. Don't wait until a parent asks. Don't exempt the last name, the volunteer-turned-staffer, or the person who's sat in the third row for twenty years.

And when you do it, tell them why. Out loud.

"We do this for everyone. Including the people we love."

That sentence is the opposite of suspicion. It's how you prove your practice is actually a practice—not just a feeling.

### Action Items for This Week

- **Audit your current volunteer roster** - Identify anyone currently serving who hasn't completed the full background check process, regardless of how you know them or how long they've been serving.
- **Standardize your language** - Develop a unified script: "Everyone who serves goes through our screening process—no exceptions. This protects you, protects those you serve, and protects our church."
- **Close the loopholes** - Identify any informal "fast tracks" or exceptions in your current system and eliminate them.
- **Train all staff on the 'why'** - Help everyone understand that screening isn't about trust or distrust—it's about stewardship, wisdom, and creating a culture of safety.

## The Bottom Line

You screened the nursery volunteer and skipped the youth pastor because you knew his dad.

**That's not discernment. That's a shortcut with a last name.**

And shortcuts become stories—the kind you never wanted to tell.

I know this is awkward. I know it feels uncomfortable. But I also know you don't want familiarity to become the reason you missed something important. You care too much. You're listening to this because you want to lead well.

So do the right thing. Run the same screen for everyone. No exceptions. No shortcuts.

Because the people in the third row—and their kids—deserve the same protection as everyone else.
