# Why Church Leaders Struggle to Ask for Help (And How to Break the Cycle)

Church staff resist asking for help due to pride and fear. Learn why this happens and how to reframe asking for help as leadership strength, not weakness.

Your project's behind schedule. Your calendar looks absolutely insane. Deep down, you know you need help.

🎧 Listen to this episode:

But instead of asking, you power through. You tell yourself, "I've got this." Or that everyone else is already slammed. Or maybe—if you're being completely honest—you don't want to look like you can't handle it.

So you do what you always do: carry it alone. Until one day, you simply can't carry it anymore.

If this pattern sounds painfully familiar, you're not alone. And today, we're going to talk about why asking for help feels so impossibly hard—and more importantly, how to change it.

## The Cultural Trap That Keeps Us Silent

Most of us were shaped by a culture that celebrates self-sufficiency. "Figure it out yourself." "Don't be a burden." "Leaders have it all together." We've internalized these messages so deeply that asking for help feels like admitting defeat.

I was recently reading a piece by Dan Reiland on unshakable leadership, and it got me thinking about this weird resistance we have to reaching out. In the broader culture, self-reliance is already prized. But take all of this and put it into a ministry context, and it often becomes even worse.

Why? Because now there's a spiritual layer on top of everything else.

"Strong Christians depend on God, not people." "If I was more prayerful, I wouldn't need help." "Real faith means trusting God to provide."

So asking for help doesn't just feel like admitting you're weak—it feels like admitting you're not spiritual enough. And that's a lie we absolutely must stop believing.

## What Actually Happens When We Don't Ask for Help

Here's the ironic truth: You think you're being responsible by not asking for help. You believe you're protecting others, being a strong leader, modeling resilience.

But you're actually creating a much bigger problem—a long-term, systemic problem.

Because when you wait until you're drowning, you don't ask for help. You need *rescue*. And rescue is fundamentally different than help.

Rescue is messy. It's urgent. It's chaotic. It involves other people having to drop everything and scramble because you didn't ask soon enough. You've gone from "I could use some support" to "Everything is on fire and this is a full-blown crisis."

And here's the worst part: You've modeled to your entire team that suffering in silence is the standard. They're watching you burn out quietly and learning, through your example, to do exactly the same thing.

> "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up."
> — Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

## The Reframe You Desperately Need

Now listen—I get it. You're not trying to be a martyr. You genuinely don't want to burden people. I understand that completely. As a man, I struggle with this myself. Don't even ask me one more time to ask for directions, okay? Because I won't do it. I'll figure it out on my own until I'm so lost that I have to ask—and then it's a crisis and everybody has to scramble.

But here's the reframe that changes everything:

Asking for help is ownership, not weakness.

Asking for help *before* you're drowning isn't a sign of weakness. It's actually a sign of good leadership. It's ownership of the mission.

When you ask early, you're saying, "I care more about getting this done well than I care about looking capable." You're prioritizing your team's success and your church's mission over your own ego. You're protecting the work—and yourself—from unnecessary collapse.

Patrick Lencioni talks about vulnerability-based trust being the foundation of healthy teams. And it starts when leaders admit they don't have it all together. When you ask for help, you're not showing weakness—you're showing the kind of strength that actually builds culture.

## Three Practical Ways to Change the Pattern

### 1. Separate Asking from Needing

Asking is proactive. Needing is reactive. Start asking *before* it's urgent.

Try saying: "Hey, I've got a project coming up. Could you take a look at this with me next week?"

Instead of: "I'm buried and everything's on fire—can you drop everything and help me right now?"

### 2. Name It Out Loud with Your Team

Change the narrative by being explicit about what you're doing.

"I'm working on getting better at asking for help earlier, so I wanted to reach out. This isn't a crisis—it's just collaboration. Could you help me with this?"

You're literally reframing the ask from desperation to partnership.

### 3. Notice How You Feel When Others Ask You

When someone on your team asks you for help, how do you feel about them? Do you think they're weak? Probably not. Do you respect that they're being honest and proactive? Almost certainly.

That's exactly how people feel about you when you ask them. Extend yourself the same grace you naturally extend to others.

### Discussion Questions for Your Team

- What messages did you receive growing up about asking for help? How might those still be influencing you today?
- In our team culture, what makes it easy or difficult to ask for help? Are there unspoken rules preventing people from reaching out?
- What's one area of your current workload where you need to ask for help this week? Who could you ask?

## The Biblical Foundation We Keep Forgetting

Ministry amplifies this problem because we've spiritualized self-sufficiency. We've twisted "I can do all things through Christ" to mean "I shouldn't need people." But that's not what Paul meant at all.

Paul had a team. He asked for help constantly. He wrote letters asking churches to send him support, to send people, to pray for him. Jesus himself sent disciples out in pairs—not alone, but together. Even Jesus in the garden asked his friends to stay awake with him. (He didn't get it, but he asked.)

> "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."
> — Galatians 6:2

Asking for help isn't a lack of faith. It's how the body of Christ is supposed to function. It's actually *practicing* our theology of interdependence.

## Your Next Step

Here's your bottom line: Asking for help before you're desperate isn't weakness. It's wise stewardship of the life and ministry God has given you.

You don't have to carry all of this alone. You weren't meant to.

So here's what I want you to do this week: Identify one specific area where you need help. Not where you're drowning—where you *could use support*. Then reach out to someone on your team and ask. Not in a crisis moment, but proactively. See what happens.
