Talking about what nobody wants to discuss

What if we need to lay someone off?

Now that we are knee-deep in November, many of us are beginning to take a serious look at our church budgets. Over the next several weeks, several of us will be developing, refining, and revealing our 2021 budget... and we are finding ourselves facing a good bit of uncertainty. While some churches have found themselves in relatively decent financial shape thus far in the pandemic, many of us are beginning to ask questions about what the season ahead looks like.

On Thursday, November 19th at 12 pm eastern, I will be joining ChurchSalary.com's Aaron Hill to discuss a topic nobody ever wants to discuss: How to Downsize Your Church Staff with Dignity. While nobody likes to think through these types of topics, we, as church leaders, need to be prepared in case we find ourselves in a situation that requires it. Over the course of this 60 minute webinar, we will be discussing:
  • How can we avoid making layoffs? What budgeting practices should we take into this new year that may protect us from making cuts down the road? How are churches saving money in this season that might help us protect our current staff from layoffs?
  • The Basics of Restructuring. Are there ways that we might be able to restructure our current ministry and staffing that will allow us to better minister in the days to come and repurpose some of our current finances and manpower?
  • When we have to let someone go. When you have to let someone go, how do we do it in a way that serves both the church and your teammate well? We'll discuss principles and share some potential practical ways to have these tough conversations. Spoiler alert, I may have covered some of this here.
There is no cost for the webinar, and I would love for you to join us.
