This week I was reading through the story of Jacob during my quiet time and I was struck by something that I don't believe I've noticed before. Jacob chooses a spot to camp for the night, figuring it is as good a spot as any, and has a dream where God promises him great things. Here's how Genesis 28:16-17 describes what happened next:
When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
I don't know what your experience has been but I am often surprised by how many times I find myself doing "ordinary" things only to see God moving in them. Whether it is picking a camping spot for the night, putting together the bulletin for Sunday morning, prepping for a budget meeting, or sharing a cup of coffee with someone from your congregation, know that God is moving in that and doing amazing things.
The work that you do matters, it is incredibly important, and it has eternal ramifications. What you believe to be mundane could be a pivotal experience for those you bump into. What you believe to be ordinary and boring might be what God is going to use to completely change your life.
How has God used the mundane to change your life lately?
