Ministry demands often spike unexpectedly, pushing many churches into a relentless mode of powering through. This leads to a state of continuous overwhelm and exhaustion among the church staff; but, there is a solution - the concept of a ministry triage team.
In today's Healthy Church Staff Podcast episode, we discuss a fresh idea that centers around forming a temporary triage team. A team focused on identifying what’s essential, what’s optional, and, crucially, what’s overdue for pruning.
A common cause of staff burnout isn't necessarily an overabundance of work, but rather an overabundance of unclear priorities. Without a clear triage mindset, teams often treat all tasks as equally urgent. This mindset cloud clutters the focus, giving equal attention to tasks of varying importance which eventually leads to chaos and dysfunction.
Envision the triage team as a rapid response group that determines mission-critical tasks. This team could include two to three pivotal leaders or even be your existing leadership team. Their job is to help provide clarity by specifying what's vital for now, what can wait, and what can be omitted. By clarifying priorities, the team can prevent overwhelm and propel the ministry forward, as everyone understands their role and the tasks at hand.
To foster this culture, kick-start every staff meeting with a crucial question - “What feels overwhelming?” Encourage candid responses and provide clear permission for your team to give tasks needed focus, or to put them on pause. Alternatively, incorporate a shared Google Doc featuring both 'do later’ and 'do less' alongside your ‘to-do’ list. This can help better manage and visualize tasks.
In medical practice, triage is a well-used life-saving system. Applying the concept to your church’s functioning could not only relieve your staff from overwhelm but also create a more productive and balanced team. It’s about empowering your staff and leading them collectively towards a common goal. Be the leader that knows when to pause and re-strategize, granting your staff the permission to breathe.
