It doesn't always manifest through boasting; sometimes, it lurks behind spiritual language or even burnout. On the Healthy Church Staff podcast, we dissect how pride infiltrates a leadership team, damages trust, and disrupts collaboration. We also delve into what a humble and healthy team looks like. ## Unmasking the Many Faces of Ego The biggest threat to your church staff culture may not be theology, burnout, or budget, but ego. And it could be not just the team's ego, but possibly yours too. It doesn't always take the obvious form of loud voices or incessant name-dropping. This secretive trait can masquerade as the need for having the final word, avoiding feedback or critique, or withholding credit from others. It can even subtly influence your ministry decisions to protect your image. Ego is often most visible in retrospect, which poses the challenge of hindsight. It thrives in insecure environments, fueled by the desire to prove, defend, and dominate. However, it's crucial to remember that pride often stems from fear, not arrogance. ## Drawing the Line Between Humility and Weakness Begin your journey towards a healthier team by celebrating impact over image. Remember, humility isn't a sign of weakness - it's magnetic. Just as people were drawn to Jesus not merely by His power but also His humility, that same humility should be evident on your church staff team as well. Promote an atmosphere where it's safe to invite input, encourage the best ideas to win, where admitting mistakes publicly is acceptable and everyone's contributions are celebrated. Ensuring that your focus lies on your mission rather than protecting titles and roles is key. This humble leadership fosters trust, the fertile soil for ministry to flourish. ## The Profound Impact of Humility Pride will always overpromise, but humility is what truly delivers. If you aspire to build a magnetic team culture, start by making room for others and letting go of any need to always be the 'hero'.
