In the continually evolving world around us, change is not only unavoidable but essential - and the church is no exception. For impactful and relevant leadership, we, as church leaders and staff, need to recognize and adopt necessary changes that reflect our congregations’ evolving needs and perspectives.
For many of us, change can be unsettling. It often prompts us to step out of our comfort zones and adapt to unfamiliar conditions. However, just like the cheese market now catering to the discerning palettes of millennials, churches also need to adapt to meet the changing spiritual requirements of their members.
Many factors have shaped us, church leaders, including those that defined our predecessors' actions. Similarly, the millennial generation, born into a world vastly different from that of their elders, understandably has a unique perspective on the world, including the church.
As we’ve seen in the cheese market example, millennials are looking for something different, for authenticity - and for truth they can recognize and connect with. The same applies to their place in the church. Their ideas and approaches might differ from ours, but these differences can infuse the church community with fresh insights and new methods of faith expression.
As church leaders and church staff, it is essential to recognize the incoming generational change in our churches. The task of fostering growth in our church now involves bridging the gap between older and younger generations, learning from each other’s experiences and jointly steering the church forward in its mission.
But remember - not all change is theological. Most shifts in the church environment are cultural or methodological. These changes do not change the essence of our faith but seek to enhance and update the ways we express and share it.
Our task today is to lay the groundwork for mutual understanding and cooperation between the generations. Facilitate a healthy change within your church this week that would foresee a bright future. Lend an ear to young leaders, encourage them, and see the change they can bring about in your congregation.
